Semitruck hits sagging power line in Spokane Valley, knocks out electricity

Spokane County sheriff’s deputies and a crew from Avista Utilities responded after a semitruck hit a sagging power line on Montgomery Drive in Spokane Valley on Monday, Feb. 10, 2020. (Spokane County Sheriff’s Office)

A semitruck struck a sagging power line Monday morning in Spokane Valley, pulling several lines down onto the roadway and knocking out power to a small area.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and a crew from Avista Utilities responded after the incident occurred on Montgomery Drive near University Road. No injuries were reported.

Montgomery was closed between University and Dartmouth Lane as crews worked to remove fallen power lines.

Avista said the incident was reported shortly after 10 a.m., and 27 customers in the area were still without power shortly after 1 p.m. The utility was reporting no outages in the area by Monday evening.

The sheriff’s office said “initial information” indicated a power line had been sagging because the truck was shorter than the maximum height limit for that stretch of road.

“This remains an active investigation, and it is not known which line may have been low, why or which company owns it,” the sheriff’s office said.
