Police: Suspected drunken driver crashes early Sunday morning in north Spokane, critically injuring passengers

Two men were critically injured in a vehicle crash near the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center early Sunday morning, and the driver of the car faces multiple criminal charges.

Daryn White, 21, was booked into Spokane County Jail on Sunday and faces two counts of vehicular assault, the Spokane Police Department said in a news release. White was driving a car that struck a pole near Wellesley Avenue and Assembly Street shortly after 2 a.m. He received minor injuries in the crash.

A patrol officer reported seeing the car White was driving headed east on Garland Avenue near Ash Street a few minutes before the crash, according to the news release. The officer estimated the car was traveling faster than 80 miles per hour.

Fire and police personnel were called to the scene of the crash, and it was reported that the vehicle had caught fire with the two passengers trapped within. Those men, who were not identified in the news release, received critical injuries, and one man’s arm needed to be partially amputated, according to police.

White’s blood was drawn at the scene of the crash to test for intoxicated driving, police said. He was booked into Spokane County Jail just before 11 a.m. Sunday after receiving treatment for injuries.
