Former site of Vien Dong Vietnamese Restaurant on East Sprague undergoing renovations

The building that formerly housed Vien Dong Vietnamese Restaurant is undergoing renovations into a mixed-use space.

Property owner 1724 Sprague LLC, whose principal is Steve Schmautz, filed an application with the city to expand common areas, build an elevator shaft, repair existing stairs and upgrade the heating and air conditioning system in the 10,974-square-foot space at 1722 E. Sprague Ave.

Tenants for the mixed-use space have not yet been identified, according to the application.

The project contractor is Spokane-based SDS Construction. Spokane-based Architectural Ventures is the project architect.

The project valuation is $100,000, according to the application.

Steve Schmautz purchased the building for $560,000 in 2019, according to the Spokane County Assessor’s Office.

Vien Dong Vietnamese Restaurant closed its location on East Sprague in 2018 and has relocated to 3435 E. Trent Ave.
