Women’s basketball: EWU rallies to force OT, but loses at Weber State

Sophomore guards Grace Kirschner and Jessica McDowell-White both set career scoring highs, but the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team suffered a 83-77 overtime defeat Friday night against Weber State in Ogden, Utah.

Kirschner, from Sandpoint, scored 30 points, eclipsing her previous best of 22. Kirschner shot 10 of 16 from the field, including 7 of 10 from 3-point range, shared game-high honors with seven rebounds and had three assists.

McDowell-White, an Australian, had 22 points, three more than her previous high, on 8-of-15 and made 6 of 10 3-pointers. She also had four assists.

The Eagles (4-25 overall, 3-17 Big Sky), who closed the regular season with their fifth straight loss, rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to force overtime.

Bella Cravens made a jumper with 42 seconds remaining in regulation to give EWU a 72-70 lead, but Weber State’s Jadyn Matthews made a layup with 24 seconds left to tie the score.

The Wildcats (4-25, 2-18) made all three of their field-goal attempts in overtime and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Ula Chamberlin led Weber State with 17 points and five assists and Matthews added 16 points and seven rebounds. Shyanne Loiland added 15 points, making all six of her attempts from the field, including three 3-pointers.

After EWU’s Kennedy Dickie opened overtime with a jumper, the Wildcats scored the next six points and the Eagles never caught up again.

The Eagles will open play in the Big Sky Conference Tournament on Monday in Boise.

Idaho 61, Idaho State 50: Sisters Lizzy and Natalie Klinker combined for 27 points and 20 rebounds as the Vandals wrapped up the regular season with a Big Sky victory against the rival Bengals in Pocatello, Idaho.

Natalie Klinker, a junior post player, had a team-high 15 points and 13 rebounds. Lizzy Klinker, a senior guard, added 12 points and seven rebounds as the Vandals wrapped up second place.

Gina Marxen scored 11 points for Idaho (20-9, 15-5), which will take a five-game winning streak into next week’s conference tournament in Boise.

Dora Goles led the Bengals (17-12, 13-7) with a game-high 21 points.
