Nine months after two bodies were found in the Ridpath Club Apartments and one was ruled a homicide, the Spokane County Medical Examiner has ruled the other death a suicide.

The bodies of Joshua Bassett, who apparently killed himself, and Galina Hensz, 21, were discovered last July in the couple’s downtown apartment.

Hensz told family members shortly before her death that she was scared of Bassett and that he carried a gun. Before moving in with Bassett, Hensz had been homeless and was struggling to stay sober, her sister, Elena Hensz said.

“It’s this bad dream that I can’t wake up from because I don’t know what happened,” Elena Hensz said.

Hensz’s family believes Bassett killed their sister before killing himself.

“Honestly, from the beginning that’s what they presumed it was,” said Oksana Velkov, Hensz’s sister.

The Spokane Police Department, however, continues to investigate the case and has not determined what happened.

Bassett’s family did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
