A victim of a Sunday shooting at Cannon Park that injured three people told police the incident stemmed from threats on social media, court documents say.

The 17-year-old victim, who police believe fired a gun but has not been charged with a crime, went to Cannon Park on Sunday afternoon with about a dozen others to confront someone who was threatening one of his friends online, according to court documents. The friend was planning to fight the individual who made the alleged threats.

Several people later approached the larger group, and one person from each group began fighting one another, court documents say. Several gunshots rang out as one person in the fight chased the other.

The 17-year-old victim told police he then realized he’d been shot in the torso and saw one of his friends fall to the ground, seemingly injured by gunfire, according to court documents. The 17-year-old said he got into an SUV and that a friend drove him to MultiCare Deaconess Hospital.

A witness said a person firing a gun matched the description of the 17-year-old, appeared to be struck by a bullet from another person’s gun and got into a car of the same type and color that the 17-year-old took to the hospital, according to court documents.

When interviewed by police at the hospital, the 17-year-old told police he didn’t see anyone with a gun but provided descriptions of people from both groups, court documents say. The victim said he would not want to cooperate with prosecutors in an investigation.

Police recovered shell casings and a gun at the scene that they believed was fired by the 17-year-old, who is not old enough to own handgun, according to court documents. Officers also recovered shell casings of a different caliber, indicating two guns were fired during the shooting.

None of the three victims of the shooting sustained life-threatening injuries, according to Spokane police. No arrests had been made in the case as of Tuesday.
