Citizen journal: Spokane, through the lens and words of a third-grader

By Avram Wyche

My Town SPOKANE

School is out till next fall. My last day of 3rd grade at SIA (Spokane International Academy) ended on Friday the 13th of March. (I didn’t know that I wouldn’t be going back to school on Monday – no time to say good-bye.) All my activities have come to a stop: Scouts, karate, trips shopping with my family, movies at a theater, eating out, visiting playgrounds, Chess Club, Bloomsday training and going to school. Now I see my teacher and friends on Zoom.com – “Distant Learning.” All the kids in the United States (maybe the world) are now in homeschool. This is the year of the coronavirus – COVID-19.

I went on a hike with my cousins. We walked down the Centennial Trail. We saw the Clocktower, lots of waterfalls, a river, lots of geese, seagulls and ducks, lots of metal sculptures in the fences, a statue that looked like an old Greek sculpture but it had a mask on. We saw lots of other statues, too. We saw a man carving a cliff, a man moving bricks, a lady fixing the path, an astronaut, a guy sitting on a chair. I took all of these pictures and this is my collection of poems for all of these things.

—-

Calm river,

Oh how you slither,

Through the center,

Of my town.

—-

Sturdy bridges,

Holding up strong.

Some are short,

And others are long.

—-

Pretty fences,

Holding art,

Without you,

My body tenses.

—-

Art can be so beautiful,

Jewels flying through air,

It can make me forget,

Even about my deepest gash.

—-

Moon crater bronze,

While the goat eat up trash,

Climbing up to these women,

I fell on my – bottom.

—-

Statues are amazing,

Often take lots of work,

Some are even designed,

Just to make people smirk.

—-

Clocktower by the side,

Pavillion,

Casting shadows,

Far and wide.

—-

Waterfalls are pleasant,

And so fun to watch,

They help me feel calm,

When I’m out of my notch.

—-

Buildings around me,

Some standing up high,

Others are low,

My oh my!

—-

Geese, Geese,

Pretty and nice,

Swimming so graceful,

It’s like they’re on ice.
