Back-to-school danger
Some of my knowledgeable friends thought that I, as a long-time practicing physician, should write about my knowledge in COVID-19 spread.
This virus has been found to be spread for 15 feet in aerosolized form. Masks help; however, this virus is spread by asymptomatic people in rooms without very good ventilation. Because most asymptomatic people are children and young adults who are healthy. My experience and scientific background tells me that going back to school, no matter what isolating techniques are used, is dangerous to older teachers, parents and grandparents. Teaching in small pods in small areas would be a better way of educating our young.
It is important to separate politics and medicine. Health care considerations should never be politically determined. The current plan is to separate by 6 feet. That is not enough space; nor is avoiding change in ventilation.
We cannot afford to lose teachers as well as health care providers and the onus should not rest on the teachers to compromise their own safety for the needs of their students.
