COVID-19 and common sense

The headlines tell us that coronavirus cases are multiplying. TV and radio echo the bad news. It almost seems that the media is rooting for the virus.

In checking real data (Spokane Regional Health District), as of Oct. 16, there have been 8,492 cases of COVID, and 181 deaths. Currently, there are 21 COVID patients in the hospital. This is a lower number than previous days. Hospitalizations have been flat at around 30 since June. There are 522,798 people in the county. In looking at the deaths, 84% are over 70 years old, 59% over 80, many who were in end-of-life care. Only two people under age 50 have died of COVID or COVID-related illness. Most cases are asymptomatic.

This data should indicate to us that what the governor and county have been doing is wrong. We have allowed them to destroy a booming economy and create financial death for many. People are hurting and need to get to work. Those under age 40 should be able to live again. Kids need to be in school. It is well documented that there are way too many serious side-effects of the lockdown. Conversely, those who are aged or have physical vulnerabilities should be protected.

I would ask that all consider the Barrington Declaration and move toward the policies that it recommends. I am 74 years old and will be continue to be careful, but I want to be free to live my life. Were I half my age, I would be outraged.

If you have not read the Barrington Declaration, do so, it makes sense.
