Spokane firefighters douse Beacon Hill blazes Sunday believed to be set by humans

Four small fires burning in the Beacon Hill area near Minnehaha Park on Sunday morning were quickly extinguished by firefighters, who believe the blazes were set by people.

Dozens of firefighters responded to multiple 911 calls regarding fires in the hills above the northeast Spokane park just after 6 a.m., according to a news release from the Spokane Fire Department. The fires moved slowly through timber and brush, and were fully contained within 2 hours of the initial phone calls, according to the news release.

Fire investigators are working to determine how the fires were set. Firefighters from the Department of Natural Resources, already stretched thin by wildfires burning throughout the region, will remain on site Sunday to monitor any flare-ups, according to the release.

An investigation into the fire, which was believed to be set by humans, is ongoing.
