Learn about art’s most intriguing curiosities tonight

(Photo/Kansas Public Radio)

Most of us appreciate history. Some of us even studied it in school. And I don’t mean just sitting through class taught by a gym teacher. I mean really studying it.

And what intrigued some of us the most were the stories that went beyond dates and places and big battles of important wars.

Example: Did George Washington really wear dentures made of wood? Answer: Not likely. He wore several sets of false teeth, but they were made out of such diverse materials as ivory, gold, lead, and actual human teeth (presumably coming from the mouths of others).

Author Jennifer Dasal , too, is interested in the kinds of history that don’t typically make schoolbooks. Her particular interest involves art and its practitioners.

In her book “Artcurious: Stories of the Unexpected, Slightly Odd, and Strangely Wonderful in Art History,” she runs down some intriguing tales involving the likes of Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Andy Warhol and several others.

And you’ll get a chance to hear her talk about her book at 7 tonight during a special free Zoom event that you can access through Auntie’s Bookstore . (You can buy a copy of the book, too, which retails for a mere $17.)

Dasal, founder of the podcast ArtCurious , is a curator of modern and contemporary art at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, N.C. She will be in conversation with Carolyn Janssen , a Los Angeles-based artist and educator.
