Catherine Leroy: Vietnam War brought to life

Catherine Leroy was only 21 in 1966 when she arrived in Saigon. It was still relatively early in the Vietnam War, yet the Parisian woman managed to accompany and photograph all that she saw.
And what she saw both captured the experience of war but also the changing attitudes of those who fought it. All of this is captured in “Close-Up on War: The Story of Pioneering Photojournalist Catherine Leroy in Vietnam,” written by Spokane author Mary Cronk Farrell.
Farrell will appear in conversation with Spokesman-Review columnist (and author in her own right) Cindy Hval at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Montvale Event Center.
Calling the book “A riveting biography that puts an overlooked, award-winning female photojournalist into historical context,” Kirkus Reviews added, “This excellently written account will leave readers marveling at Leroy’s determination, bravery, and disregard for her own safety as she documented what was happening in Vietnam.”
