It’s not often that you get to see two Studio Ghibli anime features on the big screen, in the same week.

But that’s exactly what’s going to happen Sunday through Wednesday at three area Regal Cinemas theaters as the Studio Ghibli Fest 2023 screens not just one but two Hayao Miyazaki films, “Nausicaã of the Valley of the Wind” and “Castle in the Sky.”

“Nausicaä” (1984) tells the tale of a brave princess who strives to quell the fighting between two warring factions. It will screen in a dubbed version (voiced by the likes of Shia LaBeouf, Alison Lohman and Patrick Stewart) at 4 p.m. Sunday at Northtown Mall, Spokane Valley and Coeur d’Alene’s Riverstone Stadium. A subtitled screening will be held at all three theaters at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“Castle in the Sky” (1986) focuses on the story of a young girl with mystical powers and the boy she befriends and their mutual search for the legendary floating castle Laputa. The dubbed version (featuring the voices of Anna Paquin, James Van Der Beek and Cloris Leachman) will screen at 7 p.m. in the three Regal Cinemas theaters at 7 p.m. Monday. A subtitled screening will follow at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Michael Sragow of The New Yorker wrote of ‘Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” “When mammoth dandelions puff out spores, the sight is as seductive as it is lethal.”

Of “Castle in the Sky,” James Berardinelli of ReelViews wrote, “(F)or anyone unfamiliar with Miyazaki’s canon, it provides a great introduction to a wonderfully rich animated catalog.”

Rich animated catalog indeed.
