Spokane Chiefs forward Tyus Sparks scores twice, but West stars fall to East 5-4 in WHL Prospects game | WHL hockey

LANGLEY, B.C. – It was a big night for the Spokane Chiefs at the inaugural WHL Prospects Game.

Forward Tyus Sparks scored two goals and Brody Gillespie added one, but the Western Conference stars fell to the East 5-4 at Langley Events Centre on Wednesday.

The 2026 WHL Prospects Game is a one-game showcase that features the top NHL Draft-eligible prospects from the WHL’s Eastern Conference taking on the best from the WHL’s Western Conference

The East stars went up 3-0 on goals by Landon Amrhein (Calgary), Zach Olsen (Saskatoon) and Giorges Pantelas (Brandon).

Sparks got the West stars on the board at 17:23 of the second period with a one-time from the left wing circle off a feed from Carson Carels (Prince George).

He scored his second of the game 50 seconds into the third, a power play goal, assisted by JP Hurlburt (Kamloops).

Gillespie tied the game with a goal at 3:37 of the third, a power play marker assisted by Carels.

Medicine Hat’s Liam Ruck put the East up at 7:24 of the third, assisted by teammates Yaroslav Bryzgalov and his brother Markus Ruck.

Hurlburt evened it at 4-4 at 13:41 of the period off Carels’ fourth assist of the game.

It headed to overtime but it didn’t take long to get the game-winner, as Daxon Rudolph (Prince Albert) ended it 14 seconds into the extra frame.

There were 38 minutes worth of penalties, including four fighting majors.

The Chiefs resume play Friday against Vancouver at the Arena at 7:05 p.m.
