Fran Quinn birdied three of the final holes in breezy conditions for a 4-under 67 and a three-stroke lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ Hoag Classic. Tied for the first-round lead with Scott McCarron after a 64 in strong wind Friday, Quinn rebounded from a bogey on the par-4 14th with birdies on the par-5 15th, par-3 17th and par-5 18th at Newport Beach Country Club.

Scott McCarron, Fran Quinn share Champions lead at windy Newport Beach

Scott McCarron closed with a birdie in windy conditions for a 7-under 64 and a share of the first-round lead with Fran Quinn in the PGA Tour Champions’ windy Hoag Classic. McCarron rebounded from a bogey on the par-4 16th with the birdie on the par-5 18th at Newport Beach Country Club. Quinn finished with a bogey on the par-4 ninth.

Kenny Perry shot an 8-under 65 to take the Cologuard Classic lead, Mark O’Meara matched the PGA Tour Champions record with eight straight birdies in a 66, and former baseball star John Smoltz failed to build on a strong start in his tour debut. Smoltz birdied three of the first eight holes, then played the final 10 in 3 over for an even-par 73.

Hale Irwin one stroke back at age 73

Hale Irwin shot a 5-under 67 at Pebble Beach in the Pure Insurance Championship, leaving the 73-year-old Hall of Famer a stroke behind leader David Frost in the PGA Tour Champions event. Irwin played his final nine holes in 6-under 26. He birdied the par-4 first, eagled the par-5 second and added birdies on the par-3 fifth, par-5 sixth and par-3 seventh.
