Gonzaga climbs to No. 15 in latest AP women’s basketball poll

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team jumped three spots to No. 15 in the latest AP poll released on Monday. The Bulldogs (19-2), coming off wins last week over San Francisco and Santa Clara, will play at Pacific on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Women’s Top 25 capsules: No. 1 UConn rebounds from loss to handle Houston 81-61

Katie Lou Samuelson had 19 points, Napheesa Collier added 18 points and the top-ranked UConn Huskies rebounded from a rare regular-season loss with an 81-61 win over Houston on Sunday, at Houston. Megan Walker had 14 points and seven rebounds, Crystal Dangerfield had 13 points and six assists and Christyn Williams had 12 points for UConn (12-1, 1-0 American), which had its streak of 126 consecutive regular-season wins snapped in a 68-57 loss to No. 8 Baylor on Thursday.

Minnesota enters women’s AP Top 25, top 5 remain unchanged

First-year Minnesota coach Lindsay Whalen became the 39th person to play and coach a team that was ranked when her alma mater entered the women’s basketball poll Monday at No. 25. Whalen is the 12th to accomplish the feat at the same school.

No. 21 UCF extends winning streak to 14 with rout of UConn

McKenzie Milton threw for 346 yards and five touchdowns and No. 21 UCF routed UConn 56-17 to extend the longest winning streak in the nation to 14 games. The reigning American Athletic Conference offensive player of the year completed 24 of 32 passes and ran for another 50 yards. UConn quarterback David Pindell threw for 266 yards and ran for 157 yards.

UConn greats expect program to climb back to elite status

Don’t tell Jim Calhoun or his former players that UConn is no longer an elite basketball program. Calhoun says the program inherited by Dan Hurley is still the same one that has won four national championships over the past 20 years. The Huskies have missed the NCAA Tournament three times in four years and are 30-35 over the past two seasons. UConn is currently under NCAA investigation and is in a $10 million contract dispute with former coach Kevin Ollie.

UConn: Kevin Ollie fired for impermissible contact, workouts

UConn says it fired coach Kevin Ollie after finding NCAA violations that included improper workouts and contact with recruits by Ollie and former UConn star Ray Allen. The violations are laid out in documents released under the Freedom of Information Act. In a statement to The Associated Press, Ollie’s lawyer called the infractions minimal. He says the school failed to justify withholding more than $10 million Ollie is owed under his contract.

Rhode Island’s Dan Hurley to coach UConn team under inquiry

Dan Hurley became a hot commodity after coaching Rhode Island to two straight NCAA Tournaments. On Thursday, he left for a bigger name in New England basketball. Hurley jumped across state lines to join a UConn team that has won four NCAA titles in 20 years but is under NCAA investigation and just finished a second straight losing season. The Huskies fired coach Kevin Ollie this month.
