Labrador best choice for Minnick challenger

On Tuesday, Idaho Republicans will be doing something they haven’t done since 1994: picking a GOP challenger they hope can unseat an incumbent Democrat in the 1st Congressional District. Five Republicans (plus an independent and a Libertarian) will appear on the ballot against freshman Congressman Walt Minnick, but the contest has turned into a showdown between military veteran and ex-CIA employee Vaughn Ward and state Rep. Raul Labrador, an attorney. Both men list addresses in Eagle, just north of Boise, but they’re even closer ideological than geographical neighbors.

Vaughn Ward’s originality woes recur

BOISE – Idaho GOP congressional candidate Vaughn Ward posted three new position statements on his website Tuesday morning – and portions of one of them, on the war in Iraq, matched nearly word-for-word a statement on a California congressman’s re-election campaign website. The matchup in the wording follows Ward’s removal of all of his position statements from his campaign website last week after The Spokesman-Review reported that five of the 10 were identical to statements on other candidates’ or congressmen’s websites, including two that touted specific pending legislation in Congress that Ward, when questioned, said he hadn’t reviewed and didn’t necessarily support.

Raul Labrador eyes more nuclear power

Idaho Republican congressional candidate Raul Labrador on Tuesday unveiled a plan for economic prosperity that leans heavily on the state developing a more robust nuclear power industry and exporting this “safe, cheap” energy to other Western states. With the primary looming Tuesday, Labrador is in a heated race with Vaughn Ward for the GOP nomination for Idaho’s 1st District seat. The winner will challenge Democratic Congressman Walt Minnick in the general election.
