Hikers circle Mont Blanc

Considered the most popular long-distance trek in Europe, the Tour du Mont Blanc is a 110-mile route through the Alps circumnavigating the 15,744-foot peak. The trail goes through France, Italy and Switzerland and over passes up to 8,480 feet in elevation. Total elevation gain for the hike is 35,000 feet. These photos follow the Landers family of Spokane as they hike the route, stay at mountain refuges and soak in the culture they experienced during their 12-day muscle-powered adventure. Nothing New Under the Sun

Not that you necessarily wanted to know, but, sometimes when no one’s looking, I dance around the house in my nightgown. Just when the mood strikes, or a particular song is on the radio. At other times my nightgown dances around without me. Like when it is hanging on the clothesline and the warm summer breeze swirls around the backyard.

EU rejects bailout for east Europe

BERLIN – European leaders Sunday rejected a Hungarian plea for a $240 billion bailout of struggling Eastern European countries, as divisions continued to fester over how to prevent economic ills from spreading across the continent. Germany, Europe’s largest economy, led opposition to the Hungarian proposal. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said a broad, regional rescue plan was ill-conceived, though she did not offer specific alternatives.

European leaders pledge finance changes

BERLIN – European leaders on Sunday pledged to establish global oversight of hedge funds, crack down on tax havens and beef up other rules as part of a reformation of the international monetary system. Leaders from eight European countries, meeting in Berlin, said they had agreed on broad principles for bolstering the regulation of global finance in advance of a summit of the world’s leading powers April 2 in London.
