Sabonis, on and off the court

Heading over to the Orleans Arena in a bit for the Gonzaga women's game vs. Santa Clara at the WCC tournament. Meanwhile, I put together a feature on Gonzaga sophomore forward Domantas Sabonis that will run in Friday's S-R. Here's the link.

The two sides of Gonzaga’s Domantas Sabonis

There are a few ways this can go. The entry pass can find Domantas Sabonis, who maneuvers for a soft, left-handed jump hook. Or the entry pass leads Sabonis for a two-handed dunk, followed by a double-arm flex and primal shouts. Or the entry pass never comes, despite Sabonis demanding the ball with a post defender pinned deep in the paint.

WCC adjusting future conference schedules

Attended media day Tuesday and came up with my weekly Gonzaga notebook. Here's my article. I covered the WCC's decision to move the opening of the conference schedule to late December again instead of pre-Christmas for at least the next three seasons, Domantas Sabonis' rebounding...

Pair of aces leaves Gonzaga Bulldogs feeling flush

Kyle Wiltjer lobbied to do post-practice interviews Tuesday with Gonzaga frontcourt sidekick Domantas Sabonis as a package deal. Wiltjer even buried a 30-foot shot in hopes of changing the minds of television interviewers.

GU’s Wiltjer leads preseason All-America team

Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer received the most votes on the Associated Press preseason All-America basketball team released Monday. The team was voted on by a 65-member national media panel. Wiltjer made the AP third-team last season.

No need to fret about Zags

A six-month journey had just come to an end with an Elite Eight loss to Duke and the last thing Gonzaga coach Mark Few wanted to talk about was the next six-month journey. But he did anyway, and there’s reason to think the 2016 Zags are capable of another special ride.

Zag families know about being in zone

HOUSTON – Gonzaga freshman forward Domantas Sabonis can picture his parents in Lithuania and his siblings in Spain watching the Zags’ NCAA tournament games in the early morning hours. “The one in Seattle (last Sunday) wasn’t that bad. It was midnight there. A lot of times it’s maybe 2 or 3 in the morning,” Sabonis said. “My dad watches the games, my mom falls asleep.”

GU notes: Several Bulldogs get first shot at NCAA tourney spotlight

SEATTLE – Kevin Pangos, Gary Bell Jr. and Kyle Wiltjer have played in six NCAA tournament games. Przemek Karnowski and Kyle Dranginis have suited up for four and played in three. But the Zags have several NCAA tournament newcomers, including Silas Melson, Eric McClellan, Domantas Sabonis and Byron Wesley. They’ll suit up for their first tourney game tonight against North Dakota State at KeyArena.
