Jon Gruden dealing with first loss since 2008 after opening dud

Losing didn’t get any easier for Jon Gruden in his nine seasons away from coaching. Gruden’s much-anticipated return from the broadcast booth to the sideline for Oakland ended in disappointment as the Raiders were outclassed in a 33-13 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The performance shows how far the Raiders have to go to get back to the level they were at when Gruden ended his first stint in Oakland more than 16 years ago. Oakland travels to Denver this weekend.

Raiders counting on rebound season from Amari Cooper

Amari Cooper’s upward career trajectory took a major detour last season when a combination of drops, injuries and overall poor play plagued him all season. After topping 1,000 yards receiving in each of his first two seasons in the NFL for Oakland, Cooper didn’t even reach 700 yards last season in a fall that was emblematic of the Raiders descent from 12 wins in 2016 to just six a year ago.

Jets trade QB Christian Hackenberg to Raiders for 2019 7th-round pick

The New York Jets have traded quarterback Christian Hackenberg to the Oakland Raiders for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2019. Jets coach Todd Bowles announced the move in his post-practice news conference. Hackenberg was a second-round pick out of Penn State in 2016, but never played a regular-season snap for the Jets.

Derrick Johnson trades Chiefs red for Raiders silver and black

Derrick Johnson has been the enemy in Oakland for 13 years, tormenting the Raiders while wearing red for the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson has now traded sides in the fierce AFC West rivalry, joining the Raiders as the veteran anchor at middle linebacker in a defense that is being rebuilt this offseason. Johnson has been one of the better linebackers in the league during his career but was allowed to leave Kansas City earlier this offseason as the team tried to get younger.

Coach Jon Gruden returns to practice field for Raiders

Jon Gruden yelled out instructions, called out plays and ran an NFL practice for the first time since leaving coaching nearly a decade ago in Tampa Bay. This was the day Gruden had been waiting for this day ever since he was hired for a second stint as Oakland Raiders coach.
