McMorris Rodgers seeks fourth term

Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers formally began her congressional re-election campaign Wednesday with no Democrat showing a strong desire to oppose her but a challenger on the right from the Constitution Party. She said she wants to return for a fourth term to fight “reckless federal spending.” As a member of House Republican leadership, she has opposed the bailouts of banks and automakers, last year’s economic stimulus package and all versions of health care reform proposed by President Barack Obama or congressional Democrats.

GOP’s ‘emergency’ call wouldn’t change much

OLYMPIA – Republicans have argued for weeks the governor should declare a financial emergency and reopen the contracts with the state employees unions, cutting pay and benefits to help balance the budget. Democrats dominate income-tax donations

BOISE – In a state where Republicans hold all but one of the top elected offices and three-quarters of the seats in the Legislature, Idaho Democrats have consistently outperformed the GOP in one area: donations from the state’s tax form checkoff. Idahoans are given the opportunity to donate $1 apiece to the party of their choice on their state income tax returns; it doesn’t raise their taxes or lower their refunds. This year, 18,278 Idahoans sent their dollars to the Democratic Party, and 13,378 chose the GOP.

Cal Thomas: GOP must stick to its tenets

Sen. John McCain’s daughter and his presidential campaign manager think they’ve figured out why McCain lost the 2008 election and what Republicans must do to win in the future. They need to be more like Democrats. Steve Schmidt and Meghan McCain delivered their analyses in separate speeches to the Log Cabin Republicans, whose stated mission “is to work within the Republican Party to advocate equal rights for all Americans, including gays and lesbians.”
