Idaho cities say river plan poses risk to their growth

A plan to reduce the amount of phosphorus flowing into the Spokane River would strangle growth in Kootenai County, Idaho municipalities said Monday. During a five-hour dispute resolution hearing, the cities said the plan favored Spokane dischargers at their expense. Sewage treatment plants in Spokane and Spokane County would be allowed to discharge phosphorus at levels of 42 parts per billion into the river from March through October, when most water quality problems occur, while Idaho dischargers would have to meet a standard of 36 parts per billion.

Body pulled from Spokane River identified

A body found in the Spokane River west of Post Falls on Saturday has been identified as a 31-year-old Spokane fugitive wanted since December on car theft charges. A bail bonds company had offered a $1,000 reward for tips that led to the arrest of Christopher M. Schelling after he failed to show up for a hearing in Spokane County Superior Court.

Walmarts on track for summer openings

Late-summer openings are anticipated for new Walmart stores in Hayden and Post Falls. The Hayden store, at the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 95 and Honeysuckle Avenue, will be a mid-size store at about 213,000 square feet, Walmart says. Located on 19 acres with 968 planned parking spaces, it will include a seasonal garden area and a fast-food tenant that hasn’t been determined.

Police are still probing death

One year ago today, 2-year-old Karina Janay Moore died from injuries she sustained 10 days earlier in her Post Falls foster home. Police received the call at two seconds after midnight on Jan. 7, 2009. When they arrived, the foster mother said the little girl had fallen down a flight of carpeted stairs. The medical examiner, however, ruled the death a homicide from “blunt force” head trauma.
