Greg Lee: Phenomenal Lake City-Coeur d’Alene game set ups Idaho postseason push

The Lake City/Coeur d’Alene football game lived up to the hype and quite possibly exceeded it. I’ve watched nearly 500 football games the last three decades. That’s a conservative estimate. The game I watched Friday was arguably the best I’ve seen. Not so much because of execution – there were plenty of mistakes because, heck, it’s high school sports – but because of pure drama and entertainment.

Lake City picks off defending state champ Coeur d’Alene

They call it Maverick: Lake City defensive backs are taught to jump a route whenever they see the quarterback’s eyes. That’s what Timberwolves junior Scott Helsper did, intercepting Coeur d’Alene quarterback Austin Lee on the first possession in overtime.

Coeur d’Alene, Lake City top power rankings

The NWPrepsNow Power Rankings continue to have a similar feel, but the order was shaken up after results from last Friday. Colville caused Freeman to fall out of the top spot after the Indians put a 28-7 headlock on the visiting Scotties.

Pick 6: Sam picks up ground

OK, all’s fair in love and war. And in Pick 6. If I’m going to gloat in victory I must be gracious in defeat. So please some applause for my opponent, Sam Adams.

Freeman remains atop power rankings

The Freeman football team continues to be the darling of the NWPrepsNow Power 6 rankings panel. The defending State 1A champion Scotties (5-0) were voted first for a second consecutive week with 56 points.

Coeur d’Alene scores late touchdown to defeat Hermiston

The Coeur d’Alene Vikings were tested down the stretch for the second straight week. This time, they passed the test. Quarterback Austin Lee’s 2-yard run with less than a minute remaining gave the Vikings a 31-27 win over Hermiston in a seesaw football game Friday night at Viking Field.

Pick 6: Chance to change the landscape

The hole has gotten deeper for Sam Adams. But the KHQ/SWX sports director has a chance to pick up some ground against yours truly this week. Or the hole could get even deeper. You know what I’m hoping for.

Tumwater eats up yards in win over Lake City

OLYMPIA – Lake City football coach Van Troxel admitted his squad hasn’t seen the Wing-T offense too many times. Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, they now have four quarters on film of it being executed to near perfection.

Pick 6: Shadle Park should rebound

It’s the last week of September and we’re soon going to flip the calendar and start seeing teams jockeying for postseason berths. Some teams have made statements loud and clear that they’re in it for the long haul. Other teams just want to find their way before they’re just a blip in the rearview mirror.

Coeur d’Alene remains on top in power rankings

Predictably, Coeur d’Alene remains atop the Power Rankings behind a 41-21 win over Moses Lake on Friday night. The Vikings (4-0) have defeated two solid Washington opponents handily, but next on the schedule is undefeated and top-ranked Highland of Pocatello. It will be a rematch of last season’s Idaho 5A title game, which Coeur d’Alene won 31-28. Another test will be Oct. 17 when the Viks take on crosstown rival Lake City, which is No. 2 in the power rankings.

Lake City outscores Shadle Park 56-34

Lake City football coach Van Troxel thought the best recipe for success against Brett Rypien-led Shadle Park was get a lead and make the Highlanders chase. The plan worked brilliantly as the Timberwolves pulled away from visiting Shadle Park 56-34 in a nonleague game Friday.

Greg Lee and Sam Adams Pick 6

Poor Sam Adams. You have to feel for him. He thought he’d gain ground on me last week, but those mighty Titans from University came through for yours truly again. I had the first perfect week, putting me at 11-1 overall. Adams is 9-3.

Pick 6: University-Ferris matchup a tough pick

Poor Sam Adams. You have to feel for him. He thought he’d gain ground on me last week but those mighty Titans from University came through for yours truly again.

Coeur d’Alene Vikings top season’s first high school power rankings

It shouldn’t come as a surprise which area high school football team received the nod as top-ranked in the first NWPrepsNow power rankings. Coeur d’Alene (3-0), Idaho’s defending State 5A champ, has recorded impressive back-to-back wins over Central Valley and Ferris. The Vikings received 36 points.
