U.S. preps for missile launch

WASHINGTON – Reacting to reports that North Korea may be preparing to test-fire a missile toward Hawaii, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Thursday that he had ordered additional missile defense assets deployed to shore up defense of the islands. Gates ordered the deployment of a powerful sea-based radar system that can help closely track the path of intercontinental ballistic missiles and also sent terminal-phase missile interceptors to Hawaii.

N. Korean missiles not immediate threat

WASHINGTON – North Korea’s missiles may be capable of hitting West Coast cities within three years, a top Pentagon official warned Tuesday, but are unlikely to be able to deliver a nuclear warhead in that that time frame. The U.S. assessment came as North Korea’s rulers show signs of preparing for additional weapons tests in the face of international condemnation and new United Nations sanctions.
