GU notes: Silas Melson decides to redshirt

Gonzaga’s backcourt is packed with experienced, proven guards that figure to consume most of the playing time this season. True freshmen guards Silas Melson and Bryan Alberts understand the depth chart and, barring injuries or unforeseen circumstances, realize there probably won’t be many minutes left to go around. Melson said Tuesday he’ll redshirt this season and Alberts said he’s leaning heavily in the same direction.

Zags’ Ryan Edwards decides best option is to redshirt

Sophomore center Ryan Edwards was in street clothes for Gonzaga’s exhibition win over Thompson Rivers on Saturday. His game-day attire will be similar for the rest of the season. Edwards has opted to redshirt, meaning he can participate in practice but not games. He will be a sophomore when the 2015-16 season rolls around – a much-improved sophomore, coach Mark Few hopes.

GU, EWU, WSU unveil new recruits

Gonzaga’s three-guard 2014 recruiting class made it official by signing letters-of-intent Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period. Josh Perkins, a 6-foot-3 guard at Huntington (W.V.) Prep, headlines GU’s class, which includes Portland guard Silas Melson and southern California guard Bryan Alberts. Gonzaga’s class was ranked 37th by ESPN.com Wednesday morning and 38th by the afternoon.
