How we voted: Michigan moves into top five; Furman ranked for first time

The Spokesman-Review’s Theo Lawson is one of 65 national media members voting in the Associated Press Top 25 basketball poll this season. Every week throughout the 2018-19 campaign, he’ll break down how he voted, offering three thoughts on the latest edition of the poll, an update on the Pac-12’s ranked teams and a look at local Top 25 representative Gonzaga. Three thoughts

Pac-12 roundup: Manny Wilkins, N’Keal Harry lead Sun Devils past No. 16 Utah 38-20

Manny Wilkins threw three touchdown passes to N’Keal Harry and Arizona State beat Utah 38-20, knocking the No. 16 Utes out of sole possession of first place in Pac-12 South. The Utes (6-3, 4-3 Pac-12) lost quarterback Tyler Huntley to an apparent shoulder or arm injury in the third quarter. The loss snapped Utah’s four-game winning streak and dropped the Utes into a first-place tie with Arizona in the clogged Pac-12 South.

Stanford beats Arizona State 20-13 for key road victory

K.J. Costello threw for 231 yards and a touchdown, and Stanford remained in the thick of the Pac-12 North Division race with a 20-13 win over Arizona State. Stanford needed a half to get its offense fully rolling off a bye week, held to a pair of field goals in the first half. The Cardinal took control with a pair of long scoring drives in the third quarter.

No. 10 Washington holds off rally, beats Arizona State 27-20

Jake Browning threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter, added a third TD toss early in the fourth quarter, and No. 10 Washington outlasted Arizona State 27-20. Browning rebounded from a handful of shaky moments in the first three weeks of the season to put together a complete performance that didn’t have any of the major miscues he’s made at times early in his senior season.

Arizona State travels to No. 10 Washington in Pac-12 opener

Coach Herm Edwards immediately went to work at finding the reasons behind the Sun Devils’ first loss of the season. It was a quick assessment knowing how quickly the Sun Devils needed to move before their conference opener on Saturday night at No. 10 Washington. Edwards’ Pac-12 debut comes in one of toughest places to play in the conference.

Washington holds on late to beat No. 25 Arizona State, 68-64

Noah Dickerson scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, David Crisp had three key baskets in the final five minutes, and Washington knocked off No. 25 Arizona State 68-64. If there was question about Washington’s validity in the Pac-12 race, some of those were answered by a gutty performance from the Huskies.

Gonzaga remains No. 12 in AP basketball poll

Gonzaga remains undisturbed while teams continue to zip up and down the AP college basketball rankings. The 12th-ranked Zags stayed in place for the third straight week after a wild 89-83 overtime victory over visiting North Dakota on Saturday.
