Northern Arizona holds off Idaho with 72-70 victory

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Mike Green and Chris Yanku each scored 17 points as Northern Arizona held on to beat Idaho 72-70 on Saturday to snap a seven-game skid. Marcus DeBerry hit a 3 to stretch the Lumberjacks’ lead to 69-61 with 2:45 remaining. Idaho used a 6-0 spurt, but Yanku and Ako Kaluna each made one of two free throws to push Northern Arizona’s (4-18, 2-9 Big Sky Conference) lead to 71-67 with 20 seconds left.

EWU wins first Big Sky road game with 84-73 victory over NAU

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Austin McBroom scored 28 points, Bogdan Bliznyuk added 22 points and 10 rebounds and Eastern Washington beat Northern Arizona 84-73 on Thursday night for its third straight victory. Bliznyuk made six 3-pointers and McBroom added four 3s. Venky Jois had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Felix Von Hofe chipped in 12 points for the Eagles (12-10, 6-4 Big Sky), who won their first conference road game in five tries.

Northern Arizona rolls past Eastern Washington

Corbin Jountti rushed for three touchdowns, Casey Jahn ran for two and Marcus Alford returned an interception 70 yards for a score as Northern Arizona defeated Eastern Washington 52-30 on Saturday night at Roos Field in Cheney.

Northern Arizona football player Michael DeGroote dies at 22 while vacationing

DENALI NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE, Alaska – Northern Arizona football player Michael DeGroote died after apparently shooting himself with a gun while vacationing with his family in Alaska. The 22-year-old DeGroote died Tuesday at a campground at Denali National Park and Preserve. Park spokeswoman Kathleen Kelly says an investigation is under way to try to determine if the shooting was accidental or deliberate, but adds the answer may never be known.

NAU coach suspended for postgame conduct

OGDEN, Utah – The Big Sky Conference has suspended Northern Arizona basketball coach Jack Murphy for one postseason game because of his conduct following the league’s tournament semifinal between Montana and Northern Arizona. Commissioner Doug Fullerton announced the suspension Sunday, saying Murphy instigated a scuffle after Montana beat Northern Arizona 61-59 on Friday night.

The Eastern Washington women’s basketball team would love to repeat history when it takes on Northern Arizona today in the Big Sky Conference tournament in Missoula. The No. 4 seed Eagles crushed the Lumberjacks 73-42 in Cheney on Feb. 21, which was the only time the teams met this year. The rematch is set for 4:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal game at host Montana.

Eagles fail to close out ’Jacks

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Eastern Washington rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half, but missed its final five shots and Northern Arizona scored the final five points of the game from the free-throw line for a 73-69 Big Sky Conference men’s basketball win Saturday at the Walkup Skydome. Tyler Harvey, Venky Jois and Bogdan Bliznyuk combined for 53 of EWU’s points, but Eastern couldn’t overcome 38.3 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent on 3-pointers (8 of 32). The Eagles took their final lead at 69-68 with 3:15 to play, but missed their last five shots, three of them open 3-pointers.
