Pedestrian killed on Highway 2

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and killed early this morning on Highway 2 nine miles south of Newport.

Memorial scholarship fund will honor UI student

Though Michelle Bonasera only lived to be 19, her legacy will help others for years to come. Bonasera died Feb. 13 when her Chevy Blazer drifted off southbound U.S. Highway 95 near Moscow, went over an embankment and rolled. Bonasera died at the scene. Police believe she’d fallen asleep at the wheel. Bonasera’s passenger, Andreé Maxwell, 20, suffered multiple injuries in the crash and spent 19 days in a hospital. She is now at home in Boise and expected to make a full recovery.

Gonzaga student body campaigns for pedestrian safety

Gonzaga University has stepped up a pedestrian safety campaign after four students have been hit at intersections near the school since January. “You need a light?” a student government member asked Friday as he offered a blinking red light to a student leaving campus. The Gonzaga Student Body Association handed out nearly 500 of the flashing red safety lights this week to students who live off campus.

Three patrol cars wrecked this week

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car was taken out of service Saturday afternoon after being involved in a non-injury collision on Highway 2. It was the third car taken out of service this week.

Newlyweds collide with STA bus on Highway 2

A collision between an STA bus and a passenger car about 2:38 p.m. today trapped one person in the car with serious injuries. Both lanes of westbound Highway 2 one mile east of Airway Heights are fully blocked.
