San Francisco Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto threw a bullpen session and the team hopes he can return from major elbow surgery as soon as this September. Cueto had elbow surgery last August. He was 18-5 in 2016 and was selected to the All-Star game, but has since gone 11-10 in the last two years combined.

Diamondbacks’ Zack Greinke OK for next start after MRI is clear

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke is on track to make his next scheduled start Tuesday at San Diego after throwing a bullpen session. Greinke felt pain in his side and was diagnosed with abdominal tightness during the eighth inning of his start Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Red Sox LHP David Price will return to rotation Monday

Red Sox left-hander David Price will return to the rotation for Monday’s series opener in Toronto. Manager Alex Cora confirmed the plan Saturday. Price has been sidelined with left elbow tendinitis since his last start on May 3. The 33-year-old lefty threw a pair of bullpens this week, and Cora said he was ready to start.

Braves release Jonny Venters 1 year after N.L. Comeback Player award

Left-hander Jonny Venters has been released by the Atlanta Braves. Venters’ comeback from his third Tommy John surgery helped him win the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award last year. The 34-year-old Venters had struggled this season and had a 17.36 ERA.

Didi Gregorius projected to return to Yankees next month

Didi Gregorius is projected to return to the New York Yankees next month, a faster recovery from Tommy John surgery than expected. He is scheduled to play shortstop next week at extended spring training in Tampa, Florida. It will be his first game action since surgery on his right elbow in October. Manager Aaron Boone does not expect Gregorius will need the equivalent of a full spring training, which is about six weeks.

Cards activate Carlos Martinez, cut Luke Gregerson

The St. Louis Cardinals have activated Carlos Martinez from the injured list after the right-hander missed the first 44 games of the season with a right shoulder cuff strain. The club also designated veteran right-hander Luke Gregerson for assignment before Friday’s interleague game at the Texas Rangers. Rookie reliever Ryan Helsley was recalled from Triple-A Memphis and right-hander Dominic Leone was sent down.

Trea Turner activated by Nats, who put Anibal Sanchez on the IL

Shortstop Trea Turner has been activated from the 10-day injured list by the Washington Nationals, who placed starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez on the IL. The 25-year-old Turner missed 38 games with a broken right index figure sustained April 2 against Philadelphia. He hit .357 with a double and two homers through the first four games of the season. Sanchez was removed in the second inning of Thursday’s start against the New York Mets with a left hamstring strain.
