Michael Brantley homers in 13th, Astros rally past Mariners 11-9

Michael Brantley hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Houston Astros an 11-9 victory over the Seattle Mariners in a game they trailed by seven runs. Houston rookie Kyle Tucker hit his first major league homer in the sixth and tied the score 9-all in the 12th with an RBI single.

Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel goes on IL; Javier Baez late scratch

Chicago Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel was put on the injured list with elbow inflammation ahead of a big series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Kimbrel hasn’t pitched since allowing a three-run home run to Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich in a 4-0 loss Sunday. The Cubs also scratched infielder Javier Baez with lingering soreness in his left thumb.

Injured Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Blake Snell is scheduled to make his first rehab start Saturday in a playoff game with Triple-A Durham. Last year’s AL Cy Young Award winner has been out since July 22 because of bone chips in his throwing elbow that required surgery. The Rays entered Thursday night’s game against Toronto on top of the AL wild-card standings.

Unhip: Browns’ Odell Beckham Jr. slowed by injury heading into opener

Browns star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is still not at full speed because of a nagging hip injury. Beckham, who came to Cleveland from New York in a blockbuster trade in March, was kept out of the four preseason games to manage the unspecified ailment. The three-time Pro Bowler said he’s been “afraid” to run as fast as he can to this point. Beckham said he has been undergoing daily treatment and hopes to be as close to 100 percent as possible for Sunday’s opener against Tennessee.

Astros pitcher Aaron Sanchez to have season-ending surgery

Houston right-hander Aaron Sanchez will have surgery on his throwing shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season. Sanchez hasn’t pitched since Aug. 20 because of what the team said was a sore right pectoral muscle. The team had expected him to return this season, but general manager Jeff Luhnow said that he would have the unspecified procedure on his right shoulder next week and wouldn’t return this year.

White Sox manager Edgar Renteria sidelined by rotator cuff surgery

White Sox manager Rick Renteria will have surgery on his right rotator cuff on Friday in Chicago. Renteria will miss the weekend home series against the Los Angeles Angels. He plans to return to the dugout early next week. The 57-year-old Renteria played parts of five seasons as an infielder in the majors.

Tri-City Dust Devils top Spokane Indians in regular-season finale

Nick Gatewood had three hits, including a pair of solo home runs, and Reinaldo Ilarraza added three hits and two RBIs as the Tri-City Dust Devils closed out the regular season with a 7-3 victory over the Spokane Indians in Northwest League play on Monday night.
