Civil War exhibit finds Valley connections

This November marks 150 years since President Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address to dedicate the Soldiers National Cemetery in Pennsylvania. At the Spokane Valley Heritage Museum, a new exhibit explores the history of the American Civil War, a conflict that killed about 750,000 soldiers.

Painted Hills will be sold at auction

The gates are locked and the grass is brown. Now the fate of the Painted Hills Golf Course is sealed: It will be sold in a trustee’s auction on the steps of the Spokane County Courthouse on Sept. 13. The golf course, at 4402 S. Dishman-Mica Road, did not open this year after the owners filed for bankruptcy in August 2012. The course is being sold to satisfy a debt of $797,000 to American West Bank.

Spokane Valley looks at adding sewer

The city of Spokane Valley is crunching numbers to see if it’s possible to add sewer to a large swath of vacant industrial land between Flora Road and Barker Road north of Euclid Avenue and south of Trent Avenue. The city’s sewer system is owned and operated by Spokane County, a holdover from before the city’s incorporation. Development engineering manager Gabe Gallinger said he was “pleasantly surprised” to discover the county plans to build new pump stations and force mains on Flora and Barker in the next couple of years, for about $4 million. That leaves the city to pay for a new gravity collection system to serve the 437 acres of land, all of which is owned by Centennial Properties. Centennial is owned by Cowles Co., which also owns The Spokesman-Review.

Trading cards theft draws collectors’ aid

When Alan Bisson hobbled on crutches into his Spokane Valley Sportscards trading shop following knee surgery in March and discovered his windows broken and collectibles missing, it was immediately apparent the culprit was a regular. “They knew what they wanted, and they got it,” Bisson said.

Brush, home fires keep crews busy

A slew of fires and a chemical spill topped an extremely busy week of 279 calls for the Spokane Valley Fire Department from July 18-24. Crews were called to storage tanks behind 4505 E. Sprague Ave. on Wednesday afternoon after an 18,000 gallon tank of magnesium chloride burst. The chemical is used as a road deicer in the winter.

Bridge master plays it forward

It’s a card game for an older generation, but Brenda Simpson, 72, is on a mission to interest Spokane Valley kids in bridge. “These kids are like sponges,” she said of teaching the game to kids.

First-year garden full of produce

At the beginning of May, it was little more than a vacant field with a couple of raised beds. Today, it’s been transformed into a lush garden, growing fresh produce for Spokane Valley Partners and a handful of neighbors who have rented beds.

Skill center fills unique role

Sparks flew earlier this week as students at the Northeast Washington Technical Skill Center tried their hand at welding, some for the first time, others on their way to certification. “My parents are both engineers; they do a lot of soldering, and this is along those lines,” said Blythe Irwin, 15. “I just wanted to see what it was like.”

Mirabeau park called a ‘jewel’

A Spokane Community College earth science instructor called Mirabeau Point Park a “jewel” and an “island of natural history” during a presentation before the Spokane Valley City Council on Tuesday. Instructor Andy Buddington seemed excited as only a geologist can be as he described unusual rock outcroppings and other features present in the 55-acre park just north of the Valley YMCA and CenterPlace. His students recently spent time surveying the park and marking their finds. “It seemed like around every nook and cranny there was an interesting site to document,” he said. “This place is a gem.”

Road projects are stop-and-go

Some issues have cropped up that are delaying two planned construction projects in Spokane Valley scheduled to be completed this year. The city has long planned to add a northbound right-turn lane at Argonne Road and Montgomery Avenue. The project was first set for 2012, then rescheduled for this summer. There are still ongoing negotiations with property owners for rights of way, and the construction start date has been pushed to 2014, Public Works Director Eric Guth said during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Crews respond to minor fires, injuries

Spokane Valley Fire Marshal Kevin Miller would like to share a few words with thieves who have been stealing the brass fittings used to hook fire hoses up to businesses’ water supply. “Recyclers know not to take these,” he said. “So to all you folks stealing this stuff, don’t take them. They’re not worth anything.”

Official: Chattaroy fire suspicious

CHATTAROY – Neighbors of two people severely burned in a mobile home explosion Wednesday struggle to believe it may have been an attempted murder. They say the couple were too quiet, too nice for it to be anything other than an accident. But the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fire at 3110 E. Chattaroy Road on Wednesday night as an attempted homicide or a high-level assault, said Lt. Steve Barbieri, an investigator at the scene Thursday.
