Just a day after earning the Big Sky Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week, Eastern Washington’s Austin McBroom picked up a big national honor.

4 Corners: Eastern Washington

Coming up: Saturday vs. Idaho, 12:05 p.m. Outlook: After playing 10 of the last 11 games on the road, EWU coach Jim Hayford said, “We’ve been gone so long we don’t know what a routine is,” Hayford said. At least the Eagles have just one game to prepare for this week, but they’ll need to tighten their defense to avoid their first 0-for-3 start in league play in five years under Hayford. Last weekend, Northern Colorado and North Dakota shot a combined 69 for 120 (57.5 percent) dropping the Eagles to 344th out of 351 DI schools in field goal-percentage defense. The more intriguing matchup is at the other end of the floor, where EWU averages 80.0 ppg (second in the conference) and 10th nationally in 3-pointers (10.5 per game). Idaho has won five straight on the strength of a defense that holds opponents to 64.6 points a game. Idaho also leads the Big Sky in rebounding with a plus-7.7 mark.EWU forward Julian Harrell, now fully recovered from hand surgery, will start on Saturday.

Austin McBroom: The point

For EWU coach Jim Hayford, the top priority in off-season recruiting was replacing Drew Brandon, a versatile 6-foot-4 point guard who was comfortable in the paint as well as the perimeter.
