Education Notebook: Cheney band earns awards

The Cheney High School Blackhawks Marching Band, made up of 95 students who have each logged hundreds of hours of marching, music, drill and color guard practice, recently completed a winning competition season.The Blackhawks were fourth place in the Auburn, Wash., Veterans Day Marching Band Championship; third place in the Northwest Marching Band Competition in Hillsboro, Ore.; second place at the Sounds of Thunder Competition at Joe Albi Stadium; and second place in the Cavalcade of Bands in Kennewick.

Education Notebook: Bemiss wins award for math

Bemiss Elementary School students were recently honored when their school was named a 2011 Title I Washington State Distinguished School by the state superintendent’s office. The students’ outstanding achievement in math earned Bemiss a $5,000 award. “In partnership with our students and their families, our Bemiss staff remains committed to providing whatever it takes to continue our goal of assisting every student, every day, in fostering positive student achievement,” Bemiss Principal Jennifer Keck said in a press release. “We understand it takes a village to support our kids.”
