Jets running back Chris Johnson shot in drive-by incident in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – New York Jets running back Chris Johnson and another passenger were shot in their shoulders while stopped at a traffic light in Orlando early Sunday morning, and the driver of the vehicle they were in was killed. The NFL player and the other passenger, Reggie Johnson, were in stable condition at a hospital Sunday. A person close to Johnson confirmed it was the running back who was involved.

Resigned Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau has resigned as the defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 77-year-old LeBeau had been with the organization for 16 seasons, including serving as defensive coordinator from 1995-96 and from 2004-14. He was also the team’s secondary coach from 1992-94. He was inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010. In his 13 years as defensive coordinator, the Steelers have finished in the top five in total defense 11 times and five times the team had the top overall ranked defense. The team won seven division championships, four AFC championships and two Super Bowls, while making the playoffs nine times during that period. Traded The Oakland Athletics acquired infielders Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar from the Tampa Bay Rays for catcher John Jaso and two minor leaguers in a trade between teams that have been very busy this offseason. The Rays also got infielder Daniel Robertson, outfielder Boog Powell and cash in this trade. The 33-year-old Zobrist is a two-time All-Star and helped the Rays make the playoffs four of the past seven seasons, including an improbable run to the World Series in 2008.

NFL notes: Chris Johnson era over in Tennessee

The Tennessee Titans told Chris Johnson they are releasing him Friday after six seasons to avoid paying $8 million the running back is due in 2014, along with the final three seasons left on the $53.5 million contract he signed in September 2011. His release comes before the Titans start their offseason program Monday with new coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Medical Lake officer honored for fire rescue

The Medical Lake Police Department and Fire Department have presented Officer Chris Johnston with a medal and certificate of appreciation for running into a burning house to save two children, one adult and several pets. In the early hours of June 27, Johnston was driving back from Airway Heights after assisting with a domestic violence case. He noticed smoke hanging in the air, but since the air was calm he couldn’t tell from which direction the smoke was coming.
