Cougar search underway after Deer Lake horse attacked

Wildlife officials are searching for a cougar that they believe attacked a horse that later had to be euthanized near Deer Lake on Tuesday night. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to a home off North Deer Lake Road shortly after 6 p.m., where they found a horse with severe front leg injuries, said Fish and Wildlife Sgt. Pam Taylor.

Man shot by deputy denies being armed

A suspected thief shot multiple times by a Stevens County sheriff’s deputy disputed law enforcement reports Sunday that he was armed with a pistol even though authorities say they recovered a gun and several other stolen items at his home. “I woke up with my body hit like a freakin’ target,” said Trinidy C. Lopez, 23, who explained during a brief telephone interview from his hospital bed that he had been asleep in his bedroom after a night of partying when deputies arrived at his Loon Lake home early Saturday and one of them began shooting. “I woke up in excruciating pain.”

Suspected vehicle prowler shot by Stevens County sheriff’s deputy

A person suspected of numerous vehicle prowls in rural Stevens County was in serious condition in a Spokane hospital Saturday after being shot by a Stevens County sheriff’s deputy. Events that led to the shooting were unclear Saturday evening. The incident began about 1:18 a.m. when the Sheriff’s Office received numerous reports of vehicle prowling in the area, according to police. A firearm was stolen from one of the vehicles. Police said deputies contacted the suspect on the 4300 block of East Deer Lake Road about 3 a.m. and shots were fired.

Heart Beats cloggers offer weekly classes

Area residents looking for a new, fun way to get their heart and feet moving now have the opportunity to join the Deer Lake Heart Beats cloggers. Interested people can join the group, founded by Barbara Cagle. Classes are held Wednesday mornings, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deer Lake Resort’s Eagles Nest, 3906 W. Canyon Springs Way in Loon Lake.
