Wildlife officials are searching for a cougar that they believe attacked a horse that later had to be euthanized near Deer Lake on Tuesday night. A suspected thief shot multiple times by a Stevens County sheriff’s deputy disputed law enforcement reports Sunday that he was armed with a pistol even though authorities say they recovered a gun and several other stolen items at his home. “I woke up with my body hit like a freakin’ target,” said Trinidy C. Lopez, 23, who explained during a brief telephone interview from his hospital bed that he had been asleep in his bedroom after a night of partying when deputies arrived at his Loon Lake home early Saturday and one of them began shooting. “I woke up in excruciating pain.”
A person suspected of numerous vehicle prowls in rural Stevens County was in serious condition in a Spokane hospital Saturday after being shot by a Stevens County sheriff’s deputy. Events that led to the shooting were unclear Saturday evening. The incident began about 1:18 a.m. when the Sheriff’s Office received numerous reports of vehicle prowling in the area, according to police. A firearm was stolen from one of the vehicles. Police said deputies contacted the suspect on the 4300 block of East Deer Lake Road about 3 a.m. and shots were fired.
