In brief: Spokane man dies after Saturday accident near Newport

A Spokane man died Sunday after the car he was riding in Saturday night hit a ditch along state Highway 211 west of Newport, Wash. David Pitts, 56, was a passenger in a car driven by Jeffrey H. Schoeny, 21, of Kapaa, Hawaii. Schoeny was driving south about 8 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of the Toyota 4Runner, according to the Washington State Patrol. Pitts was not wearing a seat belt. Schoeny, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

K9 unit tracks suspected vehicle prowler at Mead High School

John Heitman, 19, was booked into Spokane County Jail on Friday after Spokane County sheriff's deputies say they found him breaking into cars at Mead High School. A short foot pursuit ended with Heitman, who said he was stealing items to pay for meth, was tracked by a sheriff's police dog.

In brief: Bus line fined $800 for overloaded trip

Northwest Trailways, based in Spokane, has been fined $800 for overloading a bus traveling from Leavenworth to Monroe, forcing eight passengers to stand in the aisle for the 85-mile trip. An investigation by the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission found the bus line violated safety regulations when forcing passengers to stand for a distance of greater than 35 miles during the Jan. 6 trip, the WUTC said in a news release.

In brief: Police say man shot at bouncer’s home

A Spokane man upset that a club bouncer approached his girlfriend sprayed the man’s home with bullets in a recent drive-by shooting, police say. Derek L. Wilson, 24, appeared in Superior Court on Monday via video from the Spokane County Jail, where he is charged with seven counts of first-degree assault and seven counts of drive-by shooting for Feb. 3 gunfire at a home at 2812 E. Hoffman Ave.
