Ellen Travolta is out to save Christmas with annual show at CdA Resort

This year promises to be a holiday season like no other. But one thing is certain: The show will go on. “The show” is Ellen Travolta’s annual Christmas cabaret at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. And has been tradition in recent years, Travolta is asking for the community’s help in creating the show.

Ellen Travolta and family unwrap the holidays with ‘Christmas Unwrapped’

“Christmas Unwrapped,” Ellen Travolta’s latest holiday cabaret at the Coeur d’Alene Resort, opens Friday and will feature stories, music and dancing from the Travolta sisters and Ellen’s daughter, Molly Allen. A rotating crop of guest performers will round out the program, which is being directed by Troy Nickerson.

This year, Ellen Travolta and her sister, Margaret, will read stories about toys submitted by fans from all over the region. They started the storytelling project with last year’s show, “Christmas With a Twist.” This year, they sought stories about a toy received, a toy desired, or a toy given.

For Coeur d’Alene’s Ellen Travolta, ‘Grease’ still is the word 40 years later

It’s been four decades since Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta lit up the big screen as Sandy and Danny in the iconic movie musical “Grease.” To mark its 40th anniversary, Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies are bringing the film back to theaters for two nights next week. No discussion of “Grease” in our region is complete without mentioning Coeur d’Alene actress Ellen Travolta. Not only is she John Travolta’s big sister, but she has a small part, with a couple lines, playing a diner waitress in “Grease.”

Molly Allen’s ‘On Shaky Ground’ set for Playhouse performance

The show reunites the talent behind the play’s sold-out run last fall at Spokane Valley’s Ignite Community Theatre. Molly Allen, co-host of the “Dave, Ken and Molly in the Morning” radio show on 92.9 ZZU, stars in one act of the two-act production. Her stepfather, Jack Bannon, co-stars in the other act, and her mother, Ellen Travolta, will introduce the reading on Saturday night.

A night out with friends

The show reunites three couples, Ellen Travolta and Jack Bannon, Roger Welch and Mark Cotter, Laura Sable and Bill Wiemuth. They’re all longtime friends and artistic collaborators. Travolta, Bannon, Cotter and Sable were all players with Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre, where Welch was artistic director for two decades. Sable and Wiemuth (the accompanist) work as entertainers on the American Queen, a steamboat company that journeys along the Mississippi River, as do Cotter and Welch when Cotter isn’t doing his cabaret act in New York and Welch isn’t directing plays all over the country.

variety show, family feel

It’s tempting to think of this year’s holiday show at the Coeur d’Alene Resort as “A Travolta Family Christmas.” After all, the show is produced by Ellen Travolta, who appears along with her sister, Margaret, and her husband, Jack Bannon. Ellen Travolta would be quick to correct your assumption. “I Remember Christmas” is an ensemble show, she said.
