Food banks welcome gardeners’ surplus produce

The hot weather is ripening local gardens; soon it’ll be time to figure out what to do with all those extra zucchini. And tomatoes. And potatoes. For the past three years, many gardeners have turned to a local branch of the national Plant A Row For the Hungry program. Second Harvest Food Bank no longer has AmeriCorps volunteers to administer the Plant A Row program, which has led some gardeners to mistakenly believe they can no longer donate homegrown vegetables to Second Harvest Food Bank.

Tested sprouts uncontaminated

Tests at a North Idaho sprouts plant failed to turn up traces of salmonella after the government in June linked an outbreak of food-borne salmonella poisoning to two types of sprouts from the business. Nadine Scharf, owner of Evergreen Fresh Produce in Moyie Springs, says her company is on the verge of collapse after customers stopped making orders in the weeks following the government action.

EV district takes fresh approach to lunch

Call it corn shucking or corn husking, the group of eager fifth-graders at East Farms Elementary needed only 10 minutes to make 100 ears of fresh corn bare and prepped for cooking. The corn had been picked from a local farm the night before, delivered that morning and would be on students’ lunch trays the next day. It’s all part of the East Valley School District’s drive to move away from pre-packaged foods and toward more fresh produce, said food services director Georjean Kuntz.
