Sports Illustrated covers with Northwest ties

Over the years, several athletes and teams with Northwest ties have graced the cover of Sports Illustrated. On Thursday, it was the undefeated Gonzaga Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in college basketball and a favorite to win their first national title. It's the latest of many covers featuring GU. Today, we look back at several of them, as well as several others featuring Northwest athletes and coaches.

It happens every year at tournament time: Some national television person ticks me off. Actually, it’s usually multiple people. I think in TV terms, they call that a gaggle of broadcasters. Or maybe it’s a cackle. I forget. Most of the time, it’s about Gonzaga and how they pronounce it. I mean mispronounce it. Other times, it’s about how they butcher saying Spokane. In some rare circumstances, it’s literally both, and that’s when my head explodes in a phonetic fit.

Gonzaga redux: Santangelo, Calvary team up for Hoopfest

More asphalt was annexed for extra courts. The boys from Bristol are parachuting in to air baseball and soccer highlights, and even some 3-on-3, live from Nike Center Court – and welcome to them, as long as they leave Skip and Stephen A. home.
