A man was killed Thursday afternoon when the pickup he was driving veered into oncoming traffic about five miles north of Spokane.

Man killed in crash on state Highway 291

One man was killed Sunday when the driver lost control of a car on a turn of state Highway 291 northwest of Spokane. Spokane resident Marcus E. Samuels-McDaniel, 30, was a passenger in the car and not wearing a seat belt, the Washington State Patrol reported in a news release. He died at the scene.

Ford wildfire hits 550 acres, threatens 60 homes

Evacuations were ordered in southern Stevens County as a wildfire that started early Wednesday evening rapidly grew to about 700 acres. The fire, near the intersection of state Highways 231 and 291, south of Ford was about 30 acres in the early evening Wednesday.

Firefighter charged with felonies

A Spokane firefighter exonerated in a child pornography investigation two years ago threatened to beat a state trooper “to death” in a confrontation that led to felony charges Friday in Stevens County Superior Court, prosecutors allege. Newly filed documents show two Washington State Patrol troopers told investigators that Lt. Todd Chism’s anger erupted during the April 6 arrest after one told Chism he seemed familiar. They said Chism launched into a profanity-laced tirade after a brawl in which he was stunned with a Taser several times.

Troopers use Taser, arrest firefighter

A Spokane firefighter exonerated on child pornography charges two years ago is on paid leave again after an apparently violent confrontation with state troopers during a drunken driving arrest. Lt. Todd Chism was jolted with a stun gun several times after troopers found him trying to drive his truck out of a ditch along Highway 291 about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, said Bob Calkins, a Washington State Patrol spokesman.
