Hart pulled from tax panel

Idaho House Speaker Lawerence Denney announced Tuesday that he’s removing embattled Rep. Phil Hart, R-Athol, from the House Revenue and Taxation Committee for the next two years and that he’ll convene a new ethics committee to look into Hart’s conduct. Hart, a tax protester who’s locked in a fight with the state Tax Commission over back state income taxes, also owes thousands on an outstanding judgment over a 1996 timber theft from state school endowment lands.

Allred’s tax reform role attacked

BOISE – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Keith Allred in 2006 played a major part in boosting a tax break for Idaho homeowners that’s reduced their annual payments, despite a Republican attack Thursday contending his role was minimal. House Speaker Lawerence Denney, R-Midvale, and Senate President Pro Tem Bob Geddes, R-Soda Springs, accused Allred of taking too much credit for efforts to reduce property taxes in 2006, a year when home prices were skyrocketing and many residents were up in arms.
