Cheating isn’t usually what Lloyd Smith, the bat doctor of the Palouse, is all about. But Tuesday, he was looking forward to the chance to cheat his head off – with an official sanction. Unfortunately, two other realities of baseball got in the way: an injury and a rainout.

Washington State assistant professor Lloyd Smith led research there to develop the highest performing composite baseball bat and the best performing baseball, which will be used by Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins when he tries to break the Guinness World Record of 576 feet for the longest batted ball.
