Juventus wins MLS All-Star Game on penalties after 1-1 draw

Josef Martinez thrilled another record crowd in Atlanta by scoring in the Major League Soccer All-Star Game, but Italian powerhouse Juventus prevailed on penalty kicks after the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Juventus scored on all five of its penalties, clinching the victory on Mattia De Sciglio’s shot. The MLS stars scored on their first three penalties, but Bradley Wright-Phillips of New York Red Bulls left the door open in the fourth round when he slammed his shot off the post.

Kaka helps MLS All Stars to 2-1 win over Tottenham

Kaka scored on a penalty kick and set up David Villa’s goal minutes later in the first half to help the best players in Major League Soccer beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on a blustery Wednesday in Commerce City, Colorado. The MLS improved to 9-3-1 against international competition in its All-Star Game. Orlando City’s Kaka and Villa of New York City FC are the new “kids” in the league and did all right. Both made their MLS debuts this season and showed their skills in the first half before taking a seat on the bench. Harry Kane (pictured) scored for the Spurs, who open the English Premier League against Manchester United on Aug. 8. Seattle forward Clint Dempsey started for the MLS and took three shots before being subbed off at halftime. There will be a Seattle Sounders FC presence on both sides when the Major League Soccer All-Stars meet Tottenham Hotspur in the MLS All-Star Game in Commerce City, Colorado today ( 6, Fox Sports 1). Sounders’ forward Clint Dempsey and defender Chad Marshall will be on the MLS side, while former Sounders defender DeAndre Yedlin of Seattle will be with the visitors from the English Premier League. For all the honor attached to the All-Star selections, Seattle coach Sigi Schmid’s concern is that his players return healthy and fresh. “My understanding is they’ve got 22 players, so hopefully everybody plays 45 minutes,” Schmid said. – Tacoma News Tribune

Yedlin to represent Tottenham against MLS All-Stars

Speedy U.S. national team defender DeAndre Yedlin is among the players on the Tottenham Hotspur roster for the MLS All-Star Game in Commerce City, Colorado ( Wednesday, 6 p.m., Fox Sports 1). Yedlin played for the Americans in the CONCACAF Gold Cup third-place game Saturday, entering the contest late and helping set up the tying goal. Panama won the shootout 3-2 after extra time ended with the score 1-1. The Tottenham lineup also includes Argentinian midfielder Erik Lamela and Dutch goalkeeper Michel Vorm, along with Belgian midfielder Moussa Dembele and Argentinian defender Federico Fazio. – AP
