WSU notes: Redshirt freshman DE Hercules Mata’afa makes presence known

BERKELEY, Calif. – For three quarters the Washington State pass rush hounded California quarterback Jared Goff, but could never wrap him up before he squirted the ball to an open receiver or out of bounds. That changed in the fourth quarter when redshirt freshman defensive end Hercules Mata’afa picked up the first sack of his career. Two plays later, Mata’afa smashed into Goff again, making Cal’s offense backpedal like a cornerback.

Pacific-10 hits television jackpot

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-10 agreed to a 12-year television contract with Fox and ESPN on Tuesday worth about $3 billion, allowing the conference to quadruple its media rights fees and start its own network. The contract, which will begin with the 2012-13 season, will be worth about $250 million per year, guaranteeing each of the 12 schools in the conference about $21 million, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the terms had not been announced.

Whitworth’s Rory Buck wins national 100-yard breaststroke

Swimming: Whitworth junior Rory Buck overtook two competitors over the final 50 yards to win the men’s 100-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at Knoxville, Tenn. Buck (pictured above) finished in 54.30 seconds, missing the Division III record of 54.27 set in 2009.

The speedy guard tore up the court and hit a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer, lifting Washington past No. 16 Arizona 77-75 Saturday for the Pac-10 tournament championship in the first overtime title game in conference history.

Stanford rallies past UCLA for Pac-10 women’s championship

Stanford found itself in a rare hole against UCLA, needing an offensive burst to get back in the game. Toni Kokenis delivered in the clutch. The freshman from suburban Chicago scored 10 of her career-high 17 points in the final 5 minutes, 17 seconds to rally the second-ranked Cardinal past the No. 7 Bruins 64-55 at Los Angeles on Saturday for their sixth straight Pac-10 tournament championship.

Stanford will meet UCLA for Pac-10 tournament title

LOS ANGELES – Nnemkadi Ogwumike scored 32 points, her younger sister Chiney Ogwumike added 21 and No. 2 Stanford routed fourth-seeded Arizona 100-71 in the Pac-10 tournament women’s basketball semifinals on Friday. No. 16 Arizona beats USC 67-62 in Pac-10 tourney

LOS ANGELES – Derrick Williams scored 20 points and No. 16 Arizona held off Southern California 67-62 Friday night to earn a spot in the Pac-10 tournament title game for the first time since 2005. The top-seeded Wildcats (27-6) have won 12 of 14 games and will play No. 3 seed Washington in today’s championship for a trophy they last won in 2002.
