Spokane’s URM Stores on Thursday announced that the company is close to finishing an investigation of a credit card security breach last fall, and listed nearly 70 stores where transactions were exposed to card fraud.
A massive cyberattack targeting credit cards at local grocery stores has been blocked. URM Stores, which includes Rosauers Supermarkets and Yoke’s Fresh Markets, announced Monday night that modern credit card systems were placed back online Monday night after extra security systems were implemented.
Some Spokane-area grocery stores, including all 12 Yoke’s Fresh Markets and 21 Rosauers stores, are telling customers that debit and credit card payments won’t be processed normally while investigators try to secure a computer network that was hacked over the past two months. The data breach was reported in recent weeks by local banks and credit unions.
The Secret Service is investigating a rash of credit card fraud cases reported by customers of more than a dozen banks and credit unions in the Northwest. The number of people affected has not been determined, said Kevin Miller, the agent in charge of the Secret Service’s office in Spokane.
