Todd Mielke was a bit confused the first time he was asked if he’d consider heading Greater Spokane Incorporated. Mielke said he was having lunch with the chamber’s former CEO Rich Hadley in October when the topic came up. Mielke and fellow Spokane County Commissioner Shelly O’Quinn were preparing the next day to endorse longtime county employee Gerry Gemmill as their next chief executive, after Mielke failed to gain Commissioner Al French’s support for the job in May.

Inslee reactivates military alliance to retain defense jobs

OLYMPIA – Protecting the jobs and economic stimulus from the many military installations in Washington is “a no-brainer,” Gov. Jay Inslee said Wednesday as he resurrected a coalition of groups from around the state to prepare for any cuts in the nation’s defense budget. The Washington Military Alliance – which will have members from economic development offices, chambers of commerce and military installations – will help protect defense jobs, contracts and infrastructure in the state. A 2012 study estimated about 136,000 jobs and some $15.7 billion in economic activity are tied to military bases around the state and billions more are tied to contracts the Defense Department has with businesses throughout Washington.

Inland Northwest leaders ready for annual lobbying trip to Washington, D.C.

For the 20th year in a row, Greater Spokane Incorporated will send a large delegation of government and business leaders to the nation’s capital next week to lobby for regional economic concerns. GSI President and CEO Rich Hadley will lead the group of 40, his last such trip before he retires from 20 years of heading the local chamber of commerce.

Spokane’s pock-marked roads hit drivers in the wallet, study finds

Driving on damaged, inefficient roads costs the average Spokane driver $1,423 a year in increased maintenance, fuel, traffic accidents and time lost in traffic. Statewide, the cost to Washington motorists was estimated at $6.5 billion annually, according to a new study published by a national transportation research group called TRIP.

GSI hires firm to assist in search for its next CEO

Greater Spokane Incorporated has hired Waverly Partners to conduct an executive search for its next CEO. The Cleveland-based firm will work with search committee members to identify the person who will replace Rich Hadley, who is leaving after 20 years as CEO.

Rich Hadley plans to leave his 20-year career leading the region’s largest chamber of commerce. He will step down in April. Hadley, 66, became chief executive officer and president of Greater Spokane Chamber of Commerce in 1993. In 2007, the business-advocacy group changed its name to Greater Spokane Incorporated.

Casino opponents criticize tribe-funded study

Critics of the Spokane Tribe’s proposed casino and resort at Airway Heights took issue Wednesday with the findings of a consultant’s study that claimed the project poses no threat to nearby Fairchild Air Force Base. Jim McDevitt, a former U.S. attorney for Eastern Washington and a retired Washington Air National Guard chief of staff, said the tribe-funded study misrepresents Air Force flight records and misleads the community about the impact if a casino is built directly under the path of Fairchild training flights.
