Today, Tom Hearn is a trustee on the Coeur d’Alene School Board and a retired mental health professional. Some would say he has a very high forehead. But 45 years ago, he had a mustache and long, wavy brown hair. In April 1972, he was the vice presidential candidate on the undercard of a student body ticket at Chico State (Calif.) College, running with a woman who would later become a county supervisor (commissioner).

Coeur d’Alene auctioneer is among best in bidding business

A Coeur d’Alene auctioneer became the first woman to win the Annual Northwest Auctioneers Association Championship on Oct. 3. Rose Backs began her auctioneer career in 1997 and graduated third in her class from the Reppert School of Auctioneering in Indiana in 2003. She quickly became one of the top female auctioneers in the nation. Backs, whose focus is real estate auctions, talks about the art of the rapid-fire deal.

Auctioneer honored

Rose Backs, of Coeur d'Alene, recently became the first woman to win the Western Regional Auctioneer Competition. Backs worked the crowd for bids Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at a charity auction for Communities in Schools at the Lincoln Center in Spokane.
