Cool jazz: Bowhead whales improvise when singing, study says

For the first time, scientists have eavesdropped year-round on the songs of bowhead whales, the little-heard whales that roam the Arctic under the ice. They found that bowheads – the bigger, more blubbery cousins of the better known humpbacks – are more prolific and downright jazzier than other whales.

Wood carvings from Kenya are lined up next to silver jewelry from Mexico and shawls from Pakistan. Friday and Saturday, Singing Shaman Traders will be at this year’s Jubilee International Marketplace at First Presbyterian Church.

Ho Lan uses art, music to brighten lives

Ho Lan’s motivation comes from the desire to spread peace. Whether she’s singing, playing the guitar or percussion, composing a song, painting or even conversing with a friend or stranger, peace is at the core. “If I influence someone even a little, I am happy,” she said.

Actors in a local theater aren’t worried about the stormy clouds chasing everyone from the place. The drama department at Central Valley High School, 821 S. Sullivan Road, will stage “Singing in the Rain,” Wednesday through March 10 and March 14 through 17 at 7:30 p.m.
