Democratic congressional candidate Joe Pakootas struggles from time to time with people mispronouncing his name. It’s not difficult when you learn the trick, that the two O’s in the middle sound like the single O at the end of “go,” not the double Os of “moon” or “book.” But Pakootas probably won’t have anywhere near the problem that previous congressional candidate Marlyn Derby had. Her name should have been easy to pronounce and spell, on its face. But she was regularly misidentified in print, on broadcasts and in introductions.

You could call Edward Thomas Jr. a spark plug in Spokane’s African-American community or an activist for the city as a whole. Call Thomas – who passed away last week from cancer – the founding chairman of the Citizens Review Panel for Spokane police, a member of the Sports Entertainment Arts and Convention Advisory Board, a prolific writer of letters to the editor, a candidate for City Council, the campaign manager of one of the biggest upsets in the city’s mayoral politics, a serious racquetball player, or a man interested in an infinite variety of topics and fond of stylish hats.

Vestal: Pitch to add police officers must come from the top

We need more cops. This is old, old news. We needed more cops last year, when the mayor decided that what we needed was a tax freeze. We needed more cops several years ago when the police department announced a free pass for property crimes because of a staffing shortfall. And we needed more cops when the department walked that back furiously, all while blaming – who else? – the media. We needed more cops when the mayor and police chief announced their nifty new reorg, which we need less than we need more cops.
