In brief: Humane Society wants vote donors

SPOKANE COUNTY – During the election season, the Spokane Humane Society is requesting that whether you’re a “DemoCAT, RePUPlican, IndependMUTT or a member of the FLEA Party,” please cast your vote to help animals in need. The Humane Society has set up a Facebook page and is asking people to vote by clicking on the vote button and making a donation. Every vote will help create lifesaving options for animals in need.

Liberty Lake officer near scene when car crashes

The Liberty Lake Police Department didn’t have to be called to a serious accident at Mission Avenue and Corrigan Road at 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 25. An officer was nearby and heard the crash happen, said Liberty Lake Police Chief Brian Asmus. The officer found a car that had rolled into a field near the intersection. One person had been ejected and the other was trapped inside, Asmus said. The Washington State Patrol was called in to help. Both men were injured and taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Love story: Couple has eye on big picture

Maya Murphy, 28, believes in setting goals. She recently completed her first triathlon and started an investment firm with her husband, Dave Murphy. Her most treasured long-term goal also involves Dave. She said, “Several years ago at my grandpa’s funeral, my grandma told me, ‘We were married for 61 years and I still liked him.’ I thought – I want to do that! That’s when I set my goal of a 50th wedding anniversary.”

Market on South Perry moves indoors

Starting today, the Thursday Market on South Perry Street will move indoors at the Buddhio Yoga Studio just across the street from the parking lot at The Shop where it’s been all summer. This is the third year the market has moved indoors, and it will stay open Thursday afternoons through Dec. 22.

Modernization, upgrade planned for South Hill’s Hart Field

Construction of the new Jefferson Elementary School near the intersection of 37th Avenue and Manito Boulevard is under way, and come this spring a major overhaul of Hart Field will begin as well. Spokane Public Schools presented plans for the Hart Field renovation project at an open house last Thursday at Jefferson Elementary School.

Program helps young adults with transition via work experience

Katie McLaughlin, 20, and Jerad Laitinen, 19, spent part of an afternoon last week making treats for the dogs at Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Services. They spread dog food on hamburger buns and passed them out to the dogs, each taking turns passing the bun under the cage door and talking to each pet. They are at the shelter gaining work and volunteer experience through East Valley’s Success Toward Adult Responsibility program, which works to help students between 18 and 21 years old transition to adulthood. Each has some sort of disability, whether they are intellectually disabled or are autistic. They are all high-functioning students and are learning to become advocates for themselves.

Sunspot cycle on pace to be weakest event in 100 years

As we get closer to the expected peak of new solar maximum in early 2013, it looks like this cycle will not be strong, especially when compared with the one in the late 1990s, when global temperatures peaked. Over the past six months, the number of sunspots – storms on the sun – have ranged between 50 and 120 per day. There were a few days last summer when there were 150 or more sunspots.

Valley set to celebrate 10 years, plans birthday party

The city of Spokane Valley is polishing plans to hold a series of events in 2013 to celebrate the city’s 10th anniversary, starting with a birthday party on March 16. The party will include entertainment, cake and carnival games, public information officer Carolbelle Branch told the City Council during its Tuesday meeting. “It’s all going to be free,” Branch said.

Volunteer opportunities

Odyssey Youth Center - Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors and positive role models for kids at the youth center. Volunteers would provide supervision, help with meals and activities and assist staff and community educators. Greatest need is during drop-in hours. Shifts are 3:30-6 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 3:30-6 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Friday.
