Cheryl (Harris) Bendixen was born on May 4, 1954, in Seattle, WA, to Don and Gloria Harris. She died on May 5, 2024, of metastatic colon cancer and is now out of pain and with her savior, Jesus Christ. Cheryl graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in 1972. She then married the love of her life, Ken Bendixen, whom she met in Sunday School. (Ken was holding another girl’s hand and looking at Cheryl’s legs.) Cheryl worked at Miller & Felt pharmacy beginning in her junior year of high school and continued until she began working for Ken’s fledgling CPA firm as the office manager. They worked together for almost 40 years and built the firm together. Cheryl loved babies and wanted to get pregnant as soon as she was married. Ken was adamant that they wouldn’t have children until he was finished with school. So, in 1975 they officially started trying to have a baby. Finally, in 1978, they welcomed Tami, and in 1979, Keri completed the family. Cheryl loved children so much that after hers got older she began to volunteer in the nursery at church regularly. So, when grandchildren began to come along, she was ecstatic. First came Jillian, Tami’s first child. Ken thought the name was appropriate because he figured she was going to cost him “jillions” of dollars. Next came Saoirse, Keri’s daughter. And finally, Scott, Tami’s second child rounded out the grandchildren. Cheryl and Ken loved to travel and did so extensively. By the time Ken’s cancer slowed down their traveling, Cheryl said that even if they never got to travel again, she was completely satisfied. Cheryl’s greatest wish was for her children and grandchildren, along with her extended family come to know and believe in Jesus. After she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in mid-2022, she decided that she would no longer be quiet regarding her belief in Jesus and began telling anyone willing to listen about how blessed she and Ken had been, throughout their lives and especially now that she had her diagnosis. The Gospel (Good News) of Jesus is this: God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son as a sacrifice for the sin of the world, so that if anyone believes and accepts His gift of forgiveness of their sins, they will be saved. She hopes to see you all in Heaven with her. A visitation will be held Friday, May 10, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 PM, at Heritage Funeral and Cremation, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, WA. On Saturday, May 11, 2024, all are welcome to a graveside service at 10:30 AM, at Fairmount Memorial Park, 5200 W. Wellesley, Spokane, WA, and a memorial service at 2:30 PM, at First Free Methodist Church, 1725 W. Courtland, Spokane, WA 99205. Known as Pat or Patty, she passed away unexpectedly on March 30, 2024, at Holy Family Hospital.  She was born November 24, 1950, in Newport, WA, to William and Thelma Weiland Sr. of Deer Park, WA.  She graduated from Deer Park High School in 1969.  Pat worked as a waitress, cook, and school custodian.   She is preceded in death by her father, William Weiland Sr; brother, William Weiland Jr; and great-grandson, Liam Finney.  She is survived by her mother, Thelma Weiland of Deer Park; husband, Eddie Shillam of Deer Park; daughter, Shelley Radmer of Yuma, AZ; son, Jeffery Finney of Medford, OR; step-children, Chuck Finney of Hayden, ID; Jeni Leth of Hartley, IA; Justin Shillam of Billings, MT; sister, Phyllis Zimmerer (Ed) of Clayton; 14 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.   Celebration of life will be on May 18, 2024, at 1pm at the Deer Park VFW with a potluck lunch to follow.

Carol was born to Jesse and Lurleen (Clark) Clement on June 6, 1938, in Blackfoot, Idaho, and passed away at home in peace, with her family by her side, on April 27, 2024, in Spokane Valley, Washington. Carol graduated from Snake River High School in Riverside, Idaho, in 1956, as Salutatorian of her class. She attended Grimm’s School of Business in Pocatello, Idaho. She married her husband of 63 years Roger Charles Lent on June 10, 1960, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Carol worked for many years as a secretary and bookkeeper. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and a member of the Carousels and Dancing Shadows Dance Clubs. She enjoyed family, friends, dancing, reading, and sewing. Carol is survived by her husband, Roger; and her four children, Darin, Kay Ward, Lisa Lehman, and Mark. A graveside service for Carol will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at South Pines Cemetery, 13126 E. 32nd Ave., Spokane Valley, WA.

Janet Gail Oldham, née Sebo, passed away on April 29, 2024, at the age of 79 in Eugene, Oregon. Janet was born on October 26, 1944, in Yakima, Washington, to Wilfred and Hazel Sebo. She grew up in Spokane, Washington, and was a proud 1963 Lewis and Clark Tiger. Janet loved Spokane and considered it home even though she hadn’t lived there in over 60 years. She also loved her summers at the family cabin on Hayden Lake.  Janet graduated from The University of Washington with an English degree and worked in libraries at Western Washington University and Chemeketa Community College retiring in 2002.  Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jack Oldham, and her brother Fred Sebo. In her retirement, Janet spent much of her time with Jack traveling the northwest by RV and setting up a second home in Canyon City. She was an avid supporter of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and attended multiple times every year.  Janet loved to travel and counted trips to Norway, England, and France as highlights. Janet also loved reading, music, coffee, and the Oregon coast. Janet is survived in her death by her brother, Dale Sebo of Spokane; her son and daughter-in-law, Andy Oldham and Toni Cooper of Eugene; her grandsons, Dillon Oldham and Zac Oldham of Eugene; and her two great-grandchildren, Eleanor Oldham and Theo Oldham of Eugene.

 Carol E. Applegate was born on May 26, 1927, in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, to Carl and Ellen Olson. She passed away on May 3, 2024, in Spokane, Washington. Carol graduated from Lewis & Clark High School and worked for many years in banking securities. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, William (Bill) of 70 years. She is survived by her children, Richard (Jane) Applegate, and Kathryn (Kathy) Vedelago; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Fairmount Memorial Park, located at 5200 W. Wellesley Ave., Spokane, WA 99205.

(Age 82) On March 25th, 2024, we said goodbye to our beloved sister, aunty, teacher, friend, and associate: Janice Louise Franz. She meant so much to so many and, it is likely, her passing will create a void in our community that will be felt for years to come. Jan started teaching in 1966 and spent most of her career at Opportunity Elementary School in the Central Valley School District. She was proud to wear those Panda colors, but you can bet, under that Opportunity swag, there was a thick layer of Crimson and Gray. She loved each and every student who sat in her classroom over the several decades of her career. After Janice passed, her family found a bureau, in the attic, packed full of heartfelt letters and notes from many of the parents and students she served. Common to most of these communications were the words Fun, Love, and Patience. Janice was a professional and the mark of the best teachers is a well-designed lesson plan. Some of us remember Jan designing these plans, in the hot summer, beneath a thin layer of Cocoa Butter or, when cool breezes were blowing across Loon Lake, from the shelter of her screened-in cabin porch. Jan was a master of these lesson plans. The trick is to get the kids to engage, and feel a sense of excitement, anticipation, and curiosity. Carefully executed, a good lesson plan can make learning happen while the students least expect it. Of course, every master must have a masterpiece and Jan was no exception. Jan’s masterpiece was her life. She taught all of us so many important things, even when we least expected that she was teaching. She showed us, for example, that the Butterfly Effect is real and that little acts of love, caring, and generosity can flow through society and expand in force, exponentially, as they spread across the world. She did this time and again, on her own and through St. Luke’s Lutheran Church or as an active member of the PEO Sisterhood. Jan lived her faith and was prayerful, but she consistently helped God answer those prayers by turning them into actions. Jan taught her final lesson while under the palliative care of the wonderful staff at Sacred Heart Hospital. There she proved to us that the strongest, most enduring hearts are not built in the gymnasium but through the consistent and rigorous exercise of compassion. Janice is survived by her loving brother, Marvin Franz (Carol); niece, Lori Kaye; nephew, Scott Franz (Gale); Shawn & Randy Woodard; Gwenn & Bill Baer; and numerous cousins and second cousins across the Spokane-Cheney area.
